Bike Across USA – Day 32 – Newcastle, WY to Custer, SD – 37 miles

After about 10 miles I had crossed into South Dakota. Wyoming had it all – great scenery, lousy scenery – but now that I’ve crossed into another state I feel like I’m making progress again.

It started getting hillier again – well it’s called the Black Hills, so no surprise there. But the grades were generally gradual enough for the road to retain a shoulder – with the exception of a small part in the middle that had a short 7% downgrade, followed by a short 7% upgrade.

I arrived in Custer in time for a late lunch. After yesterday’s long day, I decided to cut this one short. (At least I found the library to update the map once more.)

I’m staying at the Flintstones campground – not because I like screaming kids, but it’s the closest to town. I’m a little behind schedule, so instead of riding to Mt. Rushmore, I’m going on a van tour over there tonight. Then I’ll head south towards Nebraska tomorrow.

By the way, I haven’t seen any other touring bicyclists since the one I saw just east of Yellowstone.
